The main difference: hardware

WHOOP’s business is a strap plus a membership. The strap has no screen and a long battery life, so it’s comfortable for 24/7 wear and sleep. If you already wear an Apple Watch, you’re carrying a second sensor that measures largely the same things.

Scores side by side

Both products answer the same morning question: how hard should I go today? WHOOP calls it Recovery and Strain. Pulse Coach calls it Recovery and Exertion. Pulse Coach publishes its exact formula on How it works.

Privacy

WHOOP requires an account and syncs your data to its cloud. Pulse Coach has no account and no servers, and its AI coach runs on your iPhone. Its App Store privacy label is “Data Not Collected”.

Who should choose which

WHOOP suits you if you don’t like wearing a watch, want a strap for sport and sleep, or want WHOOP’s community, team features and cloud coaching.

Pulse Coach suits you if you already wear an Apple Watch, don’t want another membership, and want your health data to stay on your phone. See the full list of WHOOP alternatives for Apple Watch.

Questions people also ask

Is Apple Watch as accurate as WHOOP for recovery?

Both measure heart rate optically, and both are most reliable at rest during sleep, which is when recovery signals are captured. Accuracy depends mostly on fit and wearing the device every night. Neither is a medical device.

Can I use Pulse Coach with WHOOP?

Pulse Coach reads from Apple Health. If WHOOP writes heart rate and sleep data to Apple Health on your iPhone, Pulse Coach can read it, but it's designed and tested around Apple Watch data.
