How to see your HRV on Apple Watch and iPhone
Short answer: Apple Watch measures HRV automatically in the background and overnight. To see it, open the Health app on iPhone → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate Variability. To take an extra reading, start a Breathe (Mindfulness) session on the watch. Apple reports HRV as SDNN in milliseconds.
Where to find HRV
On iPhone: Health app → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate Variability. Switch between day, week, month and 6-month views. Tap Show All Data to see each reading and its time.
On Apple Watch: watchOS doesn’t show an HRV history on the watch itself. The Vitals app shows other overnight metrics. Third-party apps can show HRV-based scores on the watch.
When Apple Watch measures HRV
Apple Watch takes short HRV readings periodically through the day and night, and during Breathe/Mindfulness sessions. The readings taken while you sleep are the most comparable from day to day, because posture, movement and caffeine aren’t muddying them.
How to take a manual reading
- Open the Mindfulness app on Apple Watch.
- Start a Breathe session of at least one minute.
- Sit still and breathe as guided.
- The reading appears in the Health app under Heart Rate Variability.
Manual readings are useful for spot checks, but for recovery, consistent overnight data matters more.
Reading the number
- Apple reports HRV as SDNN in milliseconds. Many studies and other wearables use RMSSD, so numbers aren’t directly comparable. See RMSSD vs SDNN.
- Your own trend is what counts. A higher-than-usual value usually means good recovery. A drop well below your normal often follows hard training, alcohol, poor sleep or illness.
- Age matters a lot. HRV falls steadily with age. See good HRV by age.
Turn HRV into a decision
HRV on its own is hard to act on. Pulse Coach combines overnight HRV with resting heart rate and sleep, compares them with your 60-day baseline, and gives you a 0–100 recovery score and a training call each morning.
Questions people also ask
Why does my Apple Watch HRV jump around so much?
Single HRV readings are noisy. They change with breathing, posture, stress and time of day. Look at overnight readings and a 7-day average rather than any one value.
Can I see HRV on the watch face?
Not natively. Apps with complications can show an HRV-based score on your watch face. Pulse Coach's complication shows your recovery score.
